From the beginning of June one of the oldest carousels in Europe will make heads turn again on Petřín hill

Prague, 31 May 2022 – From 1st June, visitors can once again ride the 200-year-old carousel loaned to Prague by its Italian owners. Symbolically, it will be making its return on Children’s Day. On this occasion, Prague City Tourism, together with the operator, is making a special allowance of one free ride per child on the carousel, having bought a ticket to the Petřín Lookout Tower or the Mirror Maze. The carousel will be at Petřín until the end of September.

The carousel, which is at Petřín for the second year in a row, enjoyed great interest last year. “We are delighted that Petřín Hill will once again be hosting the historical carousel, one year on. Visitors have the chance to take a ride on this unique attraction over the next four months. It is not just a fun treat for children, but also for adults, who will appreciate its history and distinction,” says Klára Malá, spokesperson for Prague City Tourism.

On Children’s Day, each child will get one free ride on the historical carousel with every Lookout Tower or Mirror Maze ticket. Those interested can contact the staff at the Petřín Lookout Tower Information Centre, where they will also learn a number of interesting facts about Petřín Hill and other tourist information.

This carousel, one of the most beautiful in Europe, dates from to the first half of the 19th century, according to historical records. Some sources suggest that it goes back even further, to the late 17th century. The carousel has been passed down the lineage of an Italian family from generation to generation and is most definitely not for sale.

The carousel has given a ride to thousands of people during its two-hundred-year existence and has also starred in several films, e.g. by the famous Italian director Paolo Sorentino. The ride is made all the better by the excellent work and skill of the German craftsmen who carved the horses and carriages that adorn the structure.
