Prague is the most popular destination for Czechs for the first time since 2012

Prague, 15 February 2023 – According to the latest data from the Czech Statistical Office, Prague is scoring points with Czechs and becoming the most desired tourist destination for domestic travellers for the first time since 2012, with nearly 1.5 million of them visiting in 2022. Based on a survey conducted by CzechTourism, about 70% of Czechs came to the capital for a holiday, a visit or to go shopping.

Prague is gradually becoming the most popular destination for Czech travellers, and the share of domestic tourists in the capital is also on the rise. Domestic visitors accounted for as much as one quarter of the total of 5,976,267 travellers in 2022.

It is evident that our focus on a domestic clientele paid off during the pandemic years. Thanks to our systematic promotion of domestic tourism and marketing activities, the share of Czech travellers increased by almost 10% compared to 2019,” says František Cipro, chair of the Prague City Tourism Board of Directors, adding: “In addition, this is a group of tourists who know the local conditions and cultural environment and do not need to be educated in the local rules.”

Most Czechs came to the metropolis in spring and during Advent. Last spring, they accounted for almost one third of all visitors to Prague, spending 2.5 days in the metropolis on average last year.

According to representatives of Prague City Tourism, the company is adapting some of its activities to exclusively target domestic travellers. For example, in addition to guided tours, which come free of charge with a purchased ticket to the Prague towers and only in Czech, the company offers other benefit packages, such as a ride on the historic tram line No 42. Last summer, it also launched a marketing campaign called At Home in Prague, targeting only domestic visitors.

“Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Our common goal with Prague City Tourism is to contribute to the sustainable development of tourism in the metropolis. We are working to attract solvent guests from abroad who can help develop the local economy. And through the Which way out of boredom portal, we are trying to attract Czechs to undiscovered gems, among other things. In Prague last year, these included the Ctěnice Chateau Complex, the Hvězda Summer Palace and the National Memorial in Žižkov. The discovery of places that are ready for tourists but not yet well known helps to disperse travellers around Prague,” says Jan Herget, director of the Czech tourism centre - CzechTourism.
