The first three months of the year have seen a progressive return of tourist visitors. More noticeable growth began around Easter.

11 May 2022, Prague – According to data from the Czech Statistical Office there were 757,682 visitor arrivals in Prague during the first quarter of the year, which corresponds to 50 percent of the equivalent 2019 period. Representatives of Prague City Tourism take the view that the city’s visitor numbers reached the anticipated level, the pandemic and the war conflict in Ukraine notwithstanding.

During the first three months of the year, Prague saw 757,682 incoming visitors. Most of these tourists came from within the Czech Republic, followed by visitors from Germany and Slovakia. Domestic tourists accounted for 35 percent of the total. Some 267,543 came to Prague.  Visitors spent a total of 1,677,938 nights in the capital, the average length of stay remaining around 2.2 nights.

“The post-Coronavirus crisis, the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis are causing tourists to return to the Czech capital at a more gradual pace, as has been expected. Working together with Prague City Tourism we will continue to motivate an upmarket tourist clientèle to visit Prague, particularly families from abroad and inland, seniors, and visitors focused on culture, historical monuments and fine cuisine,” says Hana Třeštíková, Councillor for Culture and Tourism.

More dynamic developments began during Easter and at the end of April when a large number of tourists visited Prague, with visitor numbers to the properties managed by Prague City Tourism approaching the pre-Covid era.

“The end of April and the Easter season are a good sign for us in terms of the number of visitors to our buildings, and encouraging for the coming months, too. For example, attendance at the Old Town Hall during Easter reached reached 80% of the average 2019 week,” explains František Cipro, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Prague City Tourism.

According to Cipro, there are clear signs that tourists want to travel again after the two crisis years marked by lengthy anti-Covid restrictions. He also takes a positive view of the fact that tourists from overseas, especially from the United States have made a comeback to the Tourist Information Centres. Yet tourists from Asian countries are still not coming back to Prague to any significant extent.

Prague City Tourism, acting with partners like Prague Airport, the Association of Hotels and Restaurants of the Czech Republic and the CzechTourism agency, is planning three large marketing campaigns to support both inbound and domestic tourism this year. In June, we shall be building on our successful digital campaign, Stay in Prague. We will also focus on supporting domestic tourism, as the two crisis years have shown that domestic tourists have begun to see Prague as a valued destination. Last but not least, PCT will launch the Enjoy Respect Prague awareness campaign, informing visitors about suitable conduct, local rules and customs.
