The popular historical tram line No. 42 extends its schedule. More than 82 thousand passengers have taken ride in its two years of operation

Prague, 27 July 2023 – Starting in July, the popular historical tourist tram line No. 42 will be extending its schedule, running every day from 10:00 to 18:00. Visitors to the city will thus be able to use a sustainable and locally emission-free option to travel around Prague and discover the city from a different perspective. The circuit line, which has already covered over 8,000 kilometres in 2023 using 11 historical cars, runs through the broader downtown area and offers unique views of the city. The tram ticket also serves as a 20% discount to ascend some of Prague’s most famous towers.

Prague City Tourism together with the Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) has decided to extend the schedule of this highly-popular tourist attraction for the summer season, namely from 1 July to 3 September. The historic tourist tram line No. 42, which regularly starts at 10:00 from the tram loop at Dlabačov, will run every day until 18:00 during the summer months. Since the beginning of this year, it has covered over 8,000 kilometres and is equally popular with children, who make up a full third of all passengers. A ticket for the historic tram is valid for 24 hours and passengers can hop on and off at any time during the day.

"I am delighted that this environmentally-friendly transport option offers an alternative way to travel around Prague. What’s more, the route passes iconic Prague landmarks and provides passenger with unconventional views of the city,” says Jiří Pospíšil, Deputy Mayor for Culture and Tourism of the City of Prague.

"At the same time, these are authentic cars from different decades in history, which makes the ride appealing not only for tourists who visit Prague, but also for admirers of historic trams. Now, passengers can also take a ride on the iconic K2 tram, which has never carried passengers before,” adds František Cipro, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Prague City Tourism.

Along the route, which lasts about 40 minutes, visitors to Prague with a ticket can hop on and off at any time or wait for their preferred car. There are several trams on the line, including unique jewels manufactured in 1908, First Republic cars in Art Nouveau style, or newer versions of trams from the 1950s and 1960s. The historic tram line No. 42 regularly adds new cars and has been running since 2021, when it first started as part of the At Home in Prague program. Two cars run on line 42 every day. The odd-numbered services are provided by cars that hark back to Prague’s public transit system in the 1950s to 1970s, while the even-numbered services are operated by cars that recall what it was like to travel in Prague during the First Republic.

"On Saturday, 1 July, it will be exactly two years since the historic line No. 42 began operation. During this time, it has transported more than 82 thousand passengers and interest among tourists and fans of trams or public transport is growing. In the first six months of this year, we have already carried almost 70%, i.e. more than two thirds of the total number of passengers in the previous year, and the main tourist season is yet to start. For the first time this year, the line is in operation all year round and due to the growing demand, we will be running it every day during the summer holidays, always in two series,” concludes Petr Witowski, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of DPP.

Those interested in travelling through Prague on the historic tram line No. 42 can purchase a ticket at the prague.eu website, at any Prague City Tourism tourist information centre, or directly from the conductor aboard the historic tram, either online No. 42, on the historic tram line No. 41, or on the historic bus line K.
