Lesser Town Bridge Tower

The taller of the two Charles Bridge towers, standing on the Lesser Town bank of the Vltava River, is the most recent part of the complex. It was built after 1464 at the expense of Czech King George of Poděbrady, replacing an older Romanesque tower, which had been built together with a shorter one, the Judith Tower. It follows the look of the older Old Town Bridge Tower at the opposite end of Charles Bridge. →

Together with the shorter and older tower, it stood guard over the access gate to the Lesser Town. The tower is also distinctive in its timber work, the oldest beams of which date back to 1503, i.e. just after the first great fire of the Lesser Town of Prague. Particularly notable is the substantial timber roof truss from the 1530s, an example of one of the early implementations of a truncated frame structure called the ‘liegender Stuhl’, which then spread in the Baroque period to practically all new buildings at that time.
The builder added two portals between the towers, connected by a crenelated rampart gallery. In all, these structures formed an enclosed barbican, so typical of Western European fortifications.
Once the two Prague towns merged into one, the tower lost its original defensive function and served as a storehouse, fire watchtower, but also as a metalwork shop. The tower stands 43.5m high, the gallery at 26m. It was originally to have a wealth of sculptural decorations, but the statuary niches have remained empty. The present look of the tower dates from 1879 to 1883, when it was modified by architect Josef Mocker. More information can be found here.
