Tourism remained profoundly down in the first quarter of this year

Prague, 10 May 2021 – Prague experienced an almost 94.6% decrease in tourism during the first three months of this year compared to 2019, the year before tourism was impacted by the pandemic. During the current period, the capital has seen the lowest influx of visitors since the beginning of the pandemic. The drop is comparable to the second quarter of 2020, when the first lockdown came into effect in the Czech Republic. At that time, tourism in Prague fell back by more than 93 percent.

Some Prague heritage sites are welcoming visitors once again after almost six months

Prague, 3 May 2021 – Prague is reopening visitor access to some of the most visited monuments in the metropolis – the Petřín Tower together with the Mirror Maze and the Old Town Hall. Prague City Tourism a.s., as the designated tourism curator of eight Prague heritage sites, has implemented several innovations for visitors this year. The organization is taking all steps to ensure that upon re-opening due care is taken to comply with all government measures, and will be asking visitors to pay heed to all hygiene rules so that their visit keeps everyone safe.

Prague Airport, CzechTourism and Prague City Tourism to Support Inbound Tourism Resumption

Representatives of Prague Airport, CzechTourism and Prague City Tourism have signed a Memorandum on a long-term joint approach to the resumption and expansion of inbound tourism to Prague and the Czech Republic. It is tourism that the parties involved see as one of the preconditions for both economic recovery post the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic growth. The co-operation also seeks to promote the development and support of sustainable tourism, which will contribute to the positive development of Prague and other regions of the Czech Republic without negatively interfering with everyday life in tourist-exposed places, such as the capital city centre.

Prague Invites Spectators Back into Theatres Through Virtual Reality

Prague City Hall, together with the Brainz Studios creative group, has today presented the globally unique service called Brejlando. It will offer experimental theatre experiences to its spectators in virtual reality (VR). With the help of state-of-the-art technologies and borrowed VR glasses, everyone can immerse in watching selected performances from Prague theatres from the comfort of their homes, as well as from a completely new angle - right from the stage, in close vicinity to the actors. The service is intended to help theatres and their fans overcome these difficult times of limited operation. However, at the same time, the initiators believe that they are establishing a new international trend that can become a permanent part of the theatres' offer.

In 2020, only 2.2 million international visitors came to Prague. Domestic tourism, on the other hand, experienced a slight upturn

Prague, 9 February 2020 - Last year, tourism in Prague suffered huge losses. According to data from the Czech Statistical Office, only 2,178,267 visitors came to Prague. Tourist visits to Prague thus reached only 27 percent of the 2019 figure. During the summer holidays, however, Prague saw a 16 percent year-on-year increase in the number of domestic tourists, partly thanks to the 'At Home in Prague' campaign.

The final phase of the At Home in Prague campaign attracts visitors to another benefits

Prague, 3 December 2020 - The At Home in Prague campaign to support tourism, which attracted thousands of domestic and foreign visitors in the summer, continues in December and offers interesting benefits again. Thanks to the mitigation of government measures, visitors can once again look forward to free tickets resulting from the regulations of the campaign and thus visit attractive places such as the Prague Zoo, Petrin Obseravtion Tower, selected museums and galleries and other interesting places in Prague.

The number of Prague visitors increased slightly during the summer. There was another decline in September 

Prague, November 9, 2020 - The decline in Prague tourism was slightly reduced to 67 percent in the third quarter, ie in the period from July to September, compared to previous months. This is mainly due to the summer months, during which the mitigated Covid 19 pandemic measures applied. However, the month of September brought another decline. According to data from the Czech Statistical Office, 746,290 visitors came to the metropolis in the third quarter and spent 1.6 million nights there. Of these, 316 thousand guests were from the Czech Republic. 

Prague has a new Tourism Strategy: more domestic visitors and the needs of the city first and foremost

Prague, October 19, 2020 - The City’s leaders, together with the Prague City Tourism co. and in cooperation with the Prague City Hall Institute of Planning and Development, have drawn up a Business Roadmap for tourist visits to the Capital City of Prague. Its purpose is to balance the economic benefits of tourism with the strategic interest of the city and its residents. It thus sets up a new, comprehensive and sustainable approach to tourism issues in the capital. The Roadmap was unanimously approved by Prague elected representatives on Thursday, October 15, 2020.
